Nous avons appris hier la disparition du photographe Chi Modu. Directeur de la photographie au magazine The Source, il avait immortalisé toute une génération de rappeurs durant les années 90. Nas, Mobb Deep, 2 Pac, Biggie, Snoop, LL Cool J, Ice Cube etc.. étaient tous passés devant son objectif. Même si le Bomb Squad dans sa formation initiale n’a été crédité en tant que tel que sur une poignée de disques, le crew de producteurs composé de Carl Ryder (alias Chuck D), Hank Shocklee, Keith Shocklee et Eric « Vietnam » Sadler a considérablement marqué le hip-hop. Célèbres pour avoir produit le classique de Public Enemy « It Takes A Nation Of Million To Hold Us Back », souvent cité comme le meilleur album de rap de tous les temps, ils ont aussi contribué, collectivement et individuellement, à redéfinir la pop moderne. Entre les tubes comme « Know The Ledge » de Rakim et les titres plus méconnus de Robert S ou K 9 Posse, Bachir a sélectionné quelques-unes de leurs meilleures productions, réparties sur trois mixes, l’un sur Cd, le second en édition limitée à 100 exemplaires sur cassette, et le dernier sur digicarte, pour rendre hommage au légendaire crew de Hempstead, Long Island.

Chris Lighty vient de nous quitter tragiquement à 44 ans. Véritable homme de l’ombre ce natif du Bronx à commencé sa carrière comme « porteur » de disques pour DJ Red Alert et « tour manager » pour BDP et Jungle Brothers. Mais c’est en créant Violator Management qu’il s’est vraiment fait un nom. Manager de Busta Rhymes, Mobb Deep, LL Cool J, De La Soul A Tribe Called Quest il était aussi à l’origine des signatures de Fat Joe, Beatnuts & Chi Ali chez Relativity.

Big Fun In The Big Town est un documentaire du réalisateur allemand Bram Van Spluntern qui avait passé une semaine à New-York en 1986 afin de filmer l’émergence de la culture Hip-Hop en cette fin des 80’s. Avec les apparitions des tout jeunes Run DMC, LL Cool J, Doug E Fresh, Biz Markie, Roxanne Shante. Restées inédites pendant 25 ans, ces images d’archives vont enfin être visibles grâce à la sortie le 22/05 d’une édition DVD qui devrait comporter pas mal de suppléments. Bref…ACHAT OBLIGATOIRE!

Content de voir que cet ouvrage de 192 pages consacré au label Def Jam vient de sortir dans une édition française avec les textes traduits par Olivier Cachin. A acheter d’urgence pour tout ceux qui veulent se cultiver un peu! En 1984, l’aspirant producteur discographique Rick Rubin et le manager vétéran Russell Simmons s’associent pour mettre en pratique une idée radicale : ils veulent lancer un label discographique qui ferait des disques fidèles à la culture hip-hop – et pas aux conventions pop du moment. Ils le nommèrent Def Jam et il devint, contre toute attente, le Motown de son époque – » le son de la jeune Amérique » et au-delà -, un label assez authentique et puissant pour plaire non seulement aux jeunes Afro-Américains mais aussi aux fans de musique de tous horizons. Def Jam recordings : la saga du label rap mythique est le premier à célébrer le label à la fois pour ses accomplissements novateurs, ses triomphes musicaux et pour son impact durable sur la mode, la pub, le cinéma, la télévision et la politique. Ses textes racontent une histoire intime et révélatrice à partir d’interviews (dont la majorité sont exclusives) avec les fondateurs du label et des artistes tels que LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Chuck D de Public Enemy, Jay-Z, Ludacris, Ja Rule, Ashanti, Kanye West et Rihanna.
